Talaris Institute is pleased to offer ten $10,000 outreach grants and five $7,500 outreach grants to PBS stations around the country. The vision of the grant is two-fold: to sustain strong partnerships between PBS stations and their key early learning

agencies, and to reach parents of young children (ages zero to five) though the vehicle of high quality research-based early learning workshops. In addition to the funding, Talaris will provide video, print materials, and lesson plans covering important child development topics such as early literacy, cognitive development, attachment/bonding, and social/emotional development.

This year’s grant opportunity through Talaris Institute is different from previous years!
  • There is no “blanket requirement” for broadcast (although this variable will be considered carefully by the review committee).
  • Up to twenty percent of the funds can be used to cover station overhead expenses such as staff time and promotion.
  • The community partners of chosen grantees will be eligible to receive stipends to do their own workshops (this is in addition to station funding).
  • Each grantee and their primary community partner will be invited to attend an all expense-paid training to be held in Seattle WA at the Talaris World Conference Center in early September 2008.

Submit your application through NCO’s PlanIt tool (www.ncoengage.org) by May 31, 2008. Make sure to read carefully the grant guidelines - they contain important instructions on how to complete each section of your Planit application.  Contact sarah.bradley@ncoengage.org if you have trouble accessing the NCO grant application.

For more information on the grant, contact Robin Horrell at robinh@talaris.org or (206) 859-5613.

Emotion Coaching - This product line was created in collaboration with Dr. John Gottman. The materials stem from his seminal book titled "How to Raise an Emotionally Intelligent Child." After years of conducting research with parents and children, he identified four primary “parenting styles” for dealing with emotions. He recommends that all caregivers incorporate the Emotion Coaching style with their children at least 30 percent of the time.

Emotion Coaching Video - This ~20 minute video includes exerpts of Dr. Gottman speaking, and contains vignettes of each the 4 parenting styles he found to be most prominent in his research. The Emotion Coaching style is emphasized.
